Six Word Saturday - #27

Show my Face blog hosts Six Word Saturday each week. I love this meme, because it is so simple yet can tell so much.  I hope to start participating every week again!

Here's what you do: Describe your life (or something) in just six words.

Fixing up the house this weekend.

There are a few things in our house that we have let go for too long.  Some friends offered to come over to help us fix them this weekend.  I am looking forward to fixing the patch of carpet in the hallway that Hunter tore up, the blinds in the kitchen that Hunter chewed up, the family room blinds that just fell down and the missing chunk of drywall in the garage.  Maybe I will actually help with some of the stuff so I can learn to be handy! ;)

21 Jump Street

I love Jonah Hill.  I like Channing Tatum.  For those two reasons only, I really wanted to see the 21 Jump Street movie.  I never watched the TV show, so I only knew what I had read in the last few weeks about it.

It was fantastic!  Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) knew each other in high school, where Schmidt was an unpopular nerd and Jenko was a cool jock.  They did not get along!  They became friends in the police academy, and ended up going undercover to bust a drug ring...back to high school.  Things have changed.  Schmidt, who hasn't changed is now cool, while Jenko doesn't fit in with the cool kids at all.

They met a boy named Eric right when they got to their "first day".  The guy who played Eric seemed so familiar the whole movie...and then when they ran the credits I remembered that Eric is played by James Franco's little brother.  They look alike and their voice sound alike...wow!

Will Schmidt and Jenko be able to bust the drug ring?  How will they deal with their role reversal?  If you want to know, you'll have to watch!  I highly recommend you do :)

Cross Fire by James Patterson

I was two books behind on the Alex Cross series James Patterson is writing.  I have always loved Alex Cross, and I love these books that focus a little more on him and his life...and his enemies.  This book has Alex Cross on the verge of getting married, which is really exciting.  But, this book also brings back Kyle Craig, one of the worst enemies Alex has ever had.  As a sniper is killing important people across Washington, DC, how will Alex Cross deal with Kyle and also plan his wedding?  Haha, gotta read the book to find out!

I am going to search my bookshelves for the next book in the series, but I'm just not sure if I own it or not :/

Santa Barbara Axxess Blogging...Year 3 #7 - China Pavilion

And back to Chinese food.  I guess we really like Asian food in my house LOL

China Pavilion is one of our favorite Chinese food restaurants in Santa Barbara.  Their food is of a higher quality than most restaurants.

My mom and I couldn't find anyone to go with us, and the Axxess deal is buy 2, get 1 free, so we ordered 3 things to share!
Cashew chicken, one of our favorites.  The sauce on this was AMAZING!

We decided to try salt and pepper fish for the first time.  My mom loved it, I only thought it was okay.  I think I should stick to sweet and sour fish from now on.

Pavilion fried rice.  This is fried rice with chicken, little asparagus pieces, topped with peanuts in Sa-Cha (fish?) sauce.  It is really good, the asparagus was cooked perfectly, but it definitely tastes like fish LOL

We saved $11.95 which was nice.  The waiter never checked on us after he dropped off our food, but everything else was great!  We will obviously be returning here because it is one of the best Chinese food restaurants in Santa Barbara.

Do you like Asian food like we do?  If so, what kind is your favorite?

I Donated Blood Today

Ever since my grandma spent about 8 weeks in the hospital a few years ago, I have been donating blood.  She required a lot of blood during her surgery and it made me realize I needed to become a donator.  Unfortunately, my veins are crap.  They are small and hard to find.  It is like torture!!!

The girl who drew my blood today told me the worst thing.  She told me her goal on the first poke was only to get the needle in...she wasn't even trying for the vein.  Ummmmm.....what???  I could get the needle in!  I don't need a professional for that!  It took her forever to find my vein and her comment really irked me.  Last time she drew my blood a few months ago, I bruised all kinds of colors!  This time she put an ice pack on my arm so hopefully it won't bruise as badly.

Do you donate blood?  Do you have all kinds of fun like I do or is it easy for you?

Miracle Cure by Harlan Coben

Miracle Cure

Miracle Cure opens with a letter from Harlan Coben to the reader, telling them not to read this book if they have never read one of his other books.  Uh oh - not a good start!  He says it's because it was his second novel...but who knows the real reason.  I've read one of his books (Just One Look) before, so I decided to go for it.

I have to say, I could not put Miracle Cure down.  I was drawn into the story from the beginning.  This book is about a newscaster woman, her sports star husband who gets sick, and some doctors in a secret laboratory, whose patients are being killed off.  The way the story all comes together is just amazing.  Even though the book had tons of characters, which I normally can't stand, I had no trouble remembering who all of them were.  This book was just as disturbing as the other book I read by him.  I even had tons of nightmares last night after finishing it!  If you are looking for a scary suspense novel, this is for you.

I am going to check our bookshelves to see if we have any other books by Harlan Coben.  I might only read them during the day though LOL

Boston Cream Cake

As you have probably guessed, I am a dessert lover.  I love all desserts, especially homemade or bakery made ones.  Store bought is okay too though LOL

A while back I won a Boston Cream Cake from Bake Me a Wish.  I have always loved Boston Cream Cake and I am really sad that Marie Callendar's keep shutting down, making it harder and harder to find!  Let me tell you though, the cake from Bake Me a Wish is delicious!  The chocolate is perfect, and so is the vanilla cream filling!  The cake was really fluffy.  It was just perfect!  I wish I could eat this cake every day!  This cake easily fed 4 of us, and we only ate about 1/3 of it!

What is your favorite type of cake?

The Hunger Games Movie

For the first time in a long time, I went to a movie on the day it came out.  I bought my tickets days in advance, stood in line, and held what felt like a million seats.  But after reading the book, I knew I had to see The Hunger Games right when it came out!

I thought the movie was fantastic!  I loved the costumes, makeup, acting, high-tech gadgets, and more!  I fell in love with Gale in the movie and felt his pain.  But, I also really love Peeta.  What a predicament LOL.  I know some people complained about details that were changed or left out but c'mon, who wants to sit through a five hour movie?  My only small complaint was the shaky camera.  It made me a bit nauseous.

If you have been debating about whether to read the books or see the movie, do it!  You won't regret it!

New York to Dallas by JD Robb

As you all know, I love the "In Death" series by J.D. Robb.  I was so excited when I was at Costco about a week ago and saw this book there.  I bought it and instantly read it.

This book brings Eve back to Dallas, where her life began.  She is hunting down a killer who she imprisoned as a rookie, that now wants to get revenge on her.

It was really fun to travel to Dallas with Eve and watch her interact with a whole new team.  I feel like I know her so well at this point, I always love seeing what she will do next.  Her next book is called "Celebrity in Death" I believe...and you can bet I will be buying it as soon as I see it in paperback!

Scardinos

I am loving trying new restaurants out every time we visit my grandparents.  We tried to go to Scardino's in Torrance once before, but they are basically reservations only so this time, we made a reservation early!  We had to wait 10ish minutes for a table which wasn't fantastic, but the food was worth the wait!

This is my blurry caesar salad.  It was really yummy!

The garlic bread was delicious.  I especially loved it dipped in my pasta sauce!

My mom ordered a half and half plate of crab ravioli and fettuccine alfredo.  She didn't love it but she was in a mood that night hahaha  I thought the alfredo sauce was amazing!

My grandma ordered a chicken breast with eggplant and pasta.  She said it was the best she has ever had!

I ordered a special of fettuccine with pesto cream sauce, chicken and broccoli.  It was soooo delicious!  I was really sad when I left it at my grandparents' house instead of bringing it home.

This restaurant really was good.  It looks like a little hole in the wall...but those are usually the best!  I am torn between wanting to go back there and wanting to look for a new place LOL

What's your favorite dish when you go out for Italian food?

Mario Party 9

Wow, Mario Party 9 made a ton of changes compared to the other versions of Mario Party.  I still love it, but it is so different!

First of all, regular stars are gone.  You now try to collect the most mini stars.  There are mini stars all over the board so you collect tons.  There are also purple stars that deduct from your stars.  I guess mini stars are the new coins, but coins are eliminated.

Next, everyone now moves across the board in a shared vehicle.  The person who is rolling the dice is the captain, and they choose where the car moves to.

The worst change is that the minigames are only played now when you land on a minigame space.  You used to play a minigame after everyone had taken a turn, but now you play way fewer!  The minigames are really fun tho!

The only other huge change I noticed was game length.  You used to pick how many turns everyone got (ranging from either 5-10 up to about 50).  Now all games are 45 minutes.  My friends and I played 2 games the other night, and they continued to play after I left.

I guess all games have to evolve.  I miss the old version, but I will learn to love the new version because Mario Party is my favorite game!

Have you ever played a Mario Party game?  Are you a Nintendo fan like I am?

Drama!

Wow, tonight was a lot more exciting than I thought it would be.  I was bored, so I decided to go visit my friend at the dive bar he works at - attached to a local restaurant.  I don't drink, but they have decent food and I like ordering something I can have for lunch the next day!

As I was sitting there, chatting with my friend and a regular there, I found out the place was robbed at knife and gunpoint the previous night!  Scary!  I go there somewhat regularly so that really freaked me out!

Then, and try to follow along here....the regular guy's wife shows up.  But...he has a girlfriend that she just found out about.  So they were totally fighting at the bar...it was super awkward!  I didn't know who I felt more sorry for, the regular guy who was being attacked by his wife or the wife who wants a guy who doesn't want her.  Neither is a good position to be in!

All I wanted to do tonight was get out of the house for a bit.  I wasn't planning on so much excitement LOL

American Idol - Top 12 Perform and Eliminations

Unfortunately I saw news about the show - both about Jermaine having a criminal past and thus being eliminated, and also who got voted off.

Phillip Phillips - Hard to Handle - I didn't know the song he did and it wasn't my favorite song choice, but he did an amazing job.  Who would know he had surgery just a few days before the show?

Jessica Sanchez - Turn the Beat Around - I thought it was fantastic but the judges found some flaws with it.  She is one of the people I think could win it!

Heejun Han - Right Here Waiting - I liked it.  The judges were iffy...J Lo liked it the best.  I know he won't win, but I am enjoying him while he is on :)

Elise Testone - Let's Stay Together - My mom and I only thought it was okay but the judges absolutely loved it. Her voice tone really is unique and I do enjoy that about her.

Deandre Brackensack - Started with Can You Feel the Love Tonight and changed to Endless Love - It was okay.  He is growing on me.  The judges didn't like the song change.

Shannon Magrane - One Sweet Day - She did a good job and the judges liked it also.

Colton Dixon - Broken Heart - I didn't love the song choice but he did a really good job and his voice sounded really good.

Erika VanPelt - Heaven - I like that song, I liked her version, she did great!  The judges were only okay about it though.

Jermaine Jones - He had 4 outstanding warrants and was sent home.  Ouch!

Skylar Laine - Love Sneaking Up On You - I thought it was okay.  I feel like her voice is stronger than the song was.  The judges loved it though.

Joshua Ledet - When a Man Loves a Woman - I was a little iffy right at first but wow, he did an amazing job.  He got all three judges on their feet halfway through the song.

Hollie Cavanagh - The Power of Love - She did a really good job.  I think it would have been "better" had she not gone right after Joshua LOL

Bottom 3:
Elise Testone
Shannon Magrane
Erika VanPelt

Eliminated
Shannon Magrane

I felt okay about her going home.  She is good but she wasn't going to win it.

South Pacific

Wow, from the second we got to La Colina Junior High to see South Pacific and saw the full parking lot and long line, we knew we were in for a treat!

My mom and I knew absolutely nothing about the story.  South Pacific takes place on an island in the South Pacific during World War II.  An American woman soldier/nurse has fallen in love with a Frenchman.  The musical is about their love story, and the story of the soldiers and people in the region.

The kids did an amazing job!  I was really impressed with these junior high kids.  They must have worked so hard.

If you haven't ever seen this musical, I highly suggest seeing it.  I would love to see it with a professional cast to see the differences :)

South Pacific and Mario Party 9

I don't have time to write a "real" blog post because I am going to South Pacific and then playing Mario Party 9 tonight.  I try not to have two plans in one night, but I just can't turn down Mario Party...especially the newest one!  So I am doing both.  I am sure I will be getting home really late so....expect reviews of both soon!

P.S. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

The Postcard Killers by James Patterson & Liza Marklund

I know a lot of people don't like James Patterson's books anymore, especially the ones he "co-writes" with another author, but I still enjoy all of his books, and The Postcard Killers was no different.

The Postcard Killers mainly takes place in Europe.  There is a couple going around Europe killing other couples, sending a postcard to a journalist before each murder.  A NYPD detective who lost his daughter to these killers goes to Europe to help track them down.  Who are the killers?  Why are they murdering people? Will Jacob find any peace?  You have to read the book to find out!

I really liked this book and could hardly put it down.  I had to know how it would end, and I have to say I was shocked by the ending.  Have you ever read this book?  Are you good at guessing book endings?

Fried Green Tomatoes - The Movie

My friend Julia and I have decided it is our duty to watch all of the decent movies on the double-stacked bookcase in my garage!  We started tonight with Fried Green Tomatoes!

Let me just say that I wish I had seen this movie a long time ago - it is so good!  The movie starts with Evelyn, a housewife, and the elderly lady she meets in a nursing home, Ninny.  As Evelyn and Ninny become friends, Ninny tells her stories from her past about two women she knew - Idgie and Ruth.  The movie hops back and forth between the present (the 1980s) and the 1930s.  I was so into both stories, and I love how the fluidly moved back and forth.  It is so scary to see what the south was like in the 1930s!  I also loved the young Mary Louise Parker.  Her character, Ruth, is so different from her character on Weeds, Nancy.

I'm sure I am the last person on earth to see this movie, but on the off chance you haven't seen it yet, you really should :)

Aviator - The FB Game I Am Obsessed With

I try so hard not to get suckered into playing new Facebook games, yet it always happens.  I found Aviator a bit boring at first, but now I play every day!  I am so glad I decided to try it out LOL

You basically fly a plane all over Africa (and more countries when you level up).  You buy bigger planes, trade items in the market, transport people and cargo, and fulfill quests like delivering a certain good to a certain city!  I am so addicted!  All I want to do is level up so that I can unlock Europe!

Have you ever played Aviator?  Do you play any other facebook games?

Something Blue by Emily Giffin

After finishing Something Borrowed, I immediately started reading Something Blue.  I think I read it for a day and a half or something because I had to know how it ended!

Something Blue is told from the point of view of Darcy, the best friend of Rachel, the main character in Something Borrowed.  I hated Darcy by the end of the book, so I was nervous to read a book all about her.  And I have to admit, I loved hating her through a lot of this book as well.  In this book, Darcy goes to London to start over, except the people in London don't love her like the people in New York used to.  Will she change?  Will she go on blaming everyone but herself for her problems?  I highly recommend reading this book and finding out.

My mom ordered a few of Emily Giffin's other books from a used bookstore down south.  I am really excited that we are going to go pick them up this weekend!

Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin

Ack, I didn't read a book for almost a week!  I finally got back on track, and read Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin in about 2-3 days.  My mom read it before me and couldn't put it down, so I had high expectations for it.  Somewhere along the way, I also remembered it was a movie I had wanted to see but never got around to.

Something Borrowed is about Rachel White, a nice attorney from New York who has always been passive, and who has always put her best friend Darcy's needs above her own.  On the night of her 30th birthday though, she ends up alone with Darcy's fiance, Dex, and they confess their feelings for one another!  Eek!  Will Darcy stay true to her friend or follow her heart?

This was a great book.  Emily Giffin's writing style is fantastic.  I felt like I was with the characters in the book the whole time, and I am almost scared to watch the movie now because what if the actors aren't how I pictured everyone?  I have to watch it anyway though, just to find out!  I hope my mom will watch it with me since she enjoyed the book as much as I did.

Now I have started Something Blue, a book that takes place after the end of Something Borrowed.  Have you heard of these books/the movie?  Have you read them/seen it?

American Idol - Top 13 Perform and Eliminations

The boys sang Stevie Wonder and the girl sang Whitney Houston.  My favorites are starred.

*Joshua Ledet - I Wish.  Hhis stage presence was so fun and he picked an excellent song

Elise Testone - Greatest Love of All to I'm Your Baby Tonight.  I'm sorry, I strongly disliked her outfit.  She sang well, but nothing outstanding, she blamed it on them changing her song last minute.

Jermaine Jones - Knocks Me Off My Feet.  I thought it was good.  He isn't my favorite on the show.

Erika Van Pelt - I Believe in You and Me.  My mom and I only thought it was okay.  The judges loved it.

Colton Dixon - Lately.  He did a good job.  I wish I had liked it more.  Again, the judges loved it.

Shannon Magrane - I Have Nothing.  I dare to say this was very good LOL  There were some notes she missed but overall I liked it.  The judges didn't like it.  I just don't agree with them at all.

*Deandre Brackensick - Master Blaster.  This is the first performance of his that I really liked!

*Skylar Laine - Where Do Broken Hearts Go.  I enjoyed her performance a lot.  I really like her!

*Heejun Han - All In Love is Fair.  His pictures with Holly and Deandre were hilarious.  The pictures he gave to Jimmy and Mary J were great.  I love him!!! :)

*Hollie Cavanagh - All the Man I Need.  Wow, she is amazing!

Jeremy Rosado - Ribbons in the Sky.  Eh, he's not my favorite and his performance wasn't my favorite.  I guess I don't understand what the judges love about him.

*Jessica Sanchez - I Will Always Love You.  She isn't Whitney....but wow she did a really good job!!!

*Phillip Phillips - Superstition.  He is so talented!  He is so charismatic!  I loved his performance! :)

SB Axxess Blogging...Year 3 #6 - Ichiban Sushi

Okay, getting better.  We followed Chinese Food with Japanese food and went to Ichiban Sushi on the Mesa in Santa Barbara.

We had never been to Ichiban Sushi before and were excited to try out a new place.  They have everything you could want at a Japanese restaurant.  They had a long list of appetizers, sushi rolls, different bowls, tempura, boats, bento boxes, and teriyaki meats.

My mom and I both ordered bento boxes, and we shared an agedashi tofu appetizer.

The yummy miso soup starter

Agedashi tofu is basically deep fried tofu in a yummy sauce, and benito (fish flakes) on top

Potato salad in the bento box.  It was interesting...but I enjoyed it.

The salad with a really yummy, thick dressing.

California rolls.  The smelt roe on top was a bit salty for me but my mom really liked it.

The teriyaki chicken...I had enough food to eat lunch the next day also!

Look at how much prettier the beef looks than the chicken, that's not fair!

The Axxess deal was buy 1 lunch, get 1 free.  I think we saved about $8 or so.  The staff there was very attentive and we liked their huge menu.  We have already talked about bringing my grandparents there the next time they come to visit.

Do you like Japanese food?  If so, what do you order?

Legacy by Danielle Steel

Danielle Steel is someone I can read again and again.  While her stories all kind of follow the same plotline - man & woman fall in love, have a conflict, then live happily ever after, the location always changes so I am good to read a few of her books each year.

Legacy is about Brigitte Nicholson.  Brigitte plays it safe - all the time!  She has had the same boyfriend for years, their relationship has plateaued.  She has been at the same job for 10 years - turning down promotions because she is content being third in command.  She has been working on publishing a book that she never has time to finish.  One day her life is suddenly turned upside down and she ends up agreeing to help her mother research their family genealogy.  Along the way Brigitte learns that she had a Sioux Indian ancestor named Wachiwi, who somehow married into her family from France.  The book is really neat because while you are reading Brigitte's story, you are also reading Wachiwi's story.  At times I forgot about Brigitte and thought I was reading a book about Wachiwi.  If you want to find out how Wachiwi got into Brigitte's family and how Brigitte's life ends up, you will have to read this book!

I love Danielle Steel, but is she on the list of authors you read?

February, 2012 Books Read

Oops, I forgot to recap all of the books I read in February.  I am doing a great job of working toward my goal of 100 books in 2012!  Below are links to my reviews if you missed them or need a book idea:

1. A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard
2. Rogue by Danielle Steel
3. While My Pretty One Sleeps by Mary Higgins Clark
4. Magnificent Folly by Iris Johansen
5. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
6. Deep in the Valley by Robyn Carr
7. Just Over the Mountain by Robyn Carr
8. Down by the River by Robyn Carr
9. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

My favorites were the two series I got into, the Grace Valley series by Robyn Carr and The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins.  Have any of you read either of those series?

Santa Barbara Axxess Blogging...Year 3 #5 - Empress Palace

I am literally failing at using my Axxess card.  This week I achieved my 5th punch since Oct 1.  That is basically 1 punch per month which is not acceptable.  My mom and I have now made a commitment to use it at least once a week until it expires or we go to all of the restaurants we want to try.

Empress Palace is one of our favorite Chinese food restaurants in Santa Barbara.  They have a really high quality of food that only a few other places have.  And..every dish there is always so good!  The deal at Empress Palace is buy one entree, get one free.  Wahoo!  You also receive 15% off every time you go after the first time.

My mom and I like to order family style.  We chose to order sweet and sour chicken and chicken egg foo young.  All of their chicken dishes are made with white meat which is really awesome!  These are two dishes we hadn't tried there before, and both were delicious.

The sweet and sour sauce was delicious and the portion size was huge.

The egg foo young patties were very large and so delicious and crispy!  The rest of the dish tasted like it was cooked in a slow cooker...it just melted in my mouth!

With our Axxess card we saved $13.99!  I definitely plan to return....after I have been to all of the other restaurants on my card LOL

As a side note...can you tell I took these pics with my phone?  I think they came out pretty nice :)

American Idol - Top 13 Announced

I generally record everything and watch it the next day...so don't ever tell me what happens on American Idol.  I have to say, I am pretty excited about the top 13.  I agree with most of the choices and like (just not love) the others.  My favorites are:

Top 10
*Phillip Phillips
*Jessica Sanchez
*Hollie Cavanagh
Joshua Ledet
*Heejun Han
Shannon Magrane
*Skylar Laine
*Elise Testone
*Colton Dixon
Jermaine Jones

3 Wild Cards
*Erika Van Pelt
Jeremy Rosado
DeAndre Brackensick

The only contestant I was really sad to see go home was Reed Grimm.  I hope he makes it some other way!  I guess there are really only a few boys that I am not a huge fan of.  This is going to be such a good season!

Savannah Smiles Girl Scout Cookies

I love all new things...but especially new foods.  The second I heard about the new flavor of Girl Scout Cookies a few months ago, I knew I had to have them.

As you can see from the above pictures, they are little lemon-flavored cookies.  They are sooooo good.  They are really lemony, like more lemony than my mom or I ever expected them to be.  My only complaint is that you don't get more in a box.  I suggest if you like lemony foods, that you buy a box of these while they are available!
