Aloha Friday #20

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Thanks to Kailani at An Island Life for starting this fun for Friday. I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response. If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog . Please be sure to head over to her blog to say hello and sign the Mr. Linky there if you are participating.

What foods are good for "dessert" that don't involve real or fake sugar?
Does anyone have any recipes including garlic that aren't gross?

I read that sugar is bad and garlic is great when it comes to getting rid of colds.  So any and all help would be appreciated.  I am missing dessert and tired of eating nasty chunks of garlic in pasta.

Thanks!!!!!

P.S.  Don't forget to enter my Tupperware contest below.

Have you looked for a garlic soup? Maybe the hot liquid with garlic would be good.

Italian food is an obviously heavy garlic, but I think to get therapudic doses you would need a garlic supplement.

You can't have sweet without sugar, sorry. But stevia is a very sweet natural sugar alternative that is now being sold at supermarkets.

I am so the wrong person to anything with food! I love garlic, maybe its the Italian in me... As for sweets, good luck with that one... I go for fruit... or maybe a peppermint tea?

Sweet with no sugar i doubt it... but fruits are a great source or sweetness and good sugars.. this week we opted for white grapes, prunes, and apples! It's a sweet combination and worked great for us(don't exaggerate 'tho or you'll spend lots of hours on the toilet sit:)
As for garlic recipes... i put garlic in almost anything...so to me anything would be garlic taste like:)
But another solution for your cold, other than garlic would be mixing juice freshly squeezed out of a lemon and honey(equal parts...when they mix they become a liquid that is sweet-sour.. we do this recipe in our family for years)Hope you get better soon!

Aloha!!

Sugarless candy??? I can't think of anything dessert without sugar unless it has a sugar substitute, like light jello. If natural sugars are ok, I'd say fruit.

I'm not sure about this one...maybe sugar free jello?

yeah, sugar free jello? I dunno. I can't even THINK about a sugarless dessert, lol

Most foods have some natural sugars in them, fruit being a prime example. Even veggies do. I am not sure what to tell you. I do not have any on hand, but I would guess sugar free Jell-o must contain some substitute.

You can always use applesauce in recipes instead of sugar. I have try pear sauce and it has worked well.
I use garlic all the time. I like to make Black beans and rice. I put onions and a little garlic an saute in olive oil then add black beans and roasted Red peppers. I will be posting the recipe this week on my Kitchen/ cookbook site.
Any time you use onions add a little garlic to it.

You should make some matzoh ball soup with garlic in both parts of it. Good luck and hope you feel better.

Shrimp scampi!

As for sugarless "desserts," I don't know... cheeses and crackers?

I'm a terrible person to ask about desserts since I have a terrible sweet tooth. I eat a lot of fruit (when I can give up the chocolate!)

I avoid fake sugars (splenda, aspertame, etc.) also. The way my body responds to them, I'm convinced they must be poison. LOL.

I'd say your best for a healthier treat for yourself w/out all the fake crap would be fresh fruit. If you get sick of just plain fruit you could try some different approaches. Banana w/a tiny bit of Hershey's Dark Chocolate Syrup. Sliced apple, sprinkled w/cinnamon, brown sugar, and a tiny butter then microwaved or baked until soft. Pears, sliced, baked, then drizzled lightly with honey. There's lots of ways to dress up fresh fruit so you don't get bored!

Garlic...not exactly sure about that one. I'd try Design It Chick's idea. Doesn't sound 1/2 bad. Also, searching for a soup with garlic in it sounds like a good idea too.

Feel better!

I love garlic bread. When I am under the weather I buy Texas Toast. As far as the non-sugary dessert I would go with fruit, stuff rich in vitamin c. Aloha and take care.

Cabbage and Garlic Soup

8 cups of chicken stock
6 cups of shredded savoy cabbage
1 cup of long-grain white rice
3 tablespoons minced garlic
1 teaspoon freshly-ground pepper
Salt, to taste
6 croutons
2 tablespoons minced parsley

In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the garlic, 2 cups of chicken stock and rice.

Bring to a boil over moderate heat; cover, then reduce heat to maintain a simmer, and cook for 20 minutes.

Transfer to a blender or food processor; then add 4 cups of the stock and blend.

Return to saucepan; add remaining 2 cups stock and cabbage.

Simmer for 15 minutes over low heat.

Add freshly ground black pepper and salt.

Place croutons in individual soup bowls and ladle soup over.

Garnish with parsley and serve.

I like nasty chunks of garlic! I don't think that I can help too much on this one!

For dessert, the thing that comes to mind is fruit.

I really love garlic, so I'm probably the wrong one to ask!

If you mean natural sugar , you can always use fruits to make salads or smoothies or I bet a good vegetarian store would have some great ideas!

And I make red beans and rice with garlic and it's not gross at all. You can't use too much garlic or too little. It must be just right. Too much will make it gross.

Hey! Thanks for stopping by:) I know this has some sugar, but I love taking those yoplait whips yogurts and freezing them. They are a great frozen treat.

Do you consider honey sugar? My most favorite dessert these days is yogurt, berries, and almonds, drizzled with honey. I love it soooo much!
